Basic lore

Ufogs are alien creatures coming from another planet.Their homeplanet was fully liveable, with a complex ecosystem. Ufogs were not the apex predators of their world, but their intelligence and capacity to organize colonies with complex hierarchy made them powerfull opponents.
But an asteroid hit the planet, destroying fauna and flora. The few creatures that survived the impact and Explosion ended up dying because of the lack of food, and oxygen. One of the only species that survived, even if a lot of them were killed, were Ufogs.
Their body can be destroyed, but an Ufogs' lifeforce is stored in their orb. If it isn't damaged, the Ufogs can enter a dormant state, and reform a body after recovering their lifeforce. Their planet being unhabitable, the surviving Ufogs were stuck in dormant state, their orb ending up getting buried after years and years under dust and dirt, waiting for a more favorable environment.Several light-years away, on Earth, humanity was thriving, but a big challenge was facing them. In need of a durable and more powerful Energy source, humans started launching spatial expeditions, in hope to find something to prevent their planet from getting totally destroyed by pollution and the lack of sources of energy sufficient for the whole population.
One expedition, following their high-tech radars, landed in the desertic rock that was once homeworld of numerous lifeforms. They found orbs, emitting a really strong signal of Energy, buried under the dirt. Little did they know it was the orbs of Dormant Ufogs… Thrilled by their discovery and the illusion of having found a way to save humanity, they called for backup, and with several cargo-ships, to bring back as much as possible to study them and find a way to use this incredible energy. It was the discovery of the century - these orbs, of different shapes and colors, were unique and highly resistant. Their composition was unknown , even if looking similar to glass - so much potential, but not once did they expect those spatial rocks to be alien creatures ready to get back to life.
They learned the harsh truth upon their arrival on earth. Earth, a planet with breathable oxygen, water, and food. The conditions were favorable for them to live…And so, thousands of Ufogs got out of Dormant state, reforming their body. And claws. And teeth. And they fighted their way to the top of this new ecosystem and planet - leading humanity to retreat in fortified cities. Ufogs were too tough to kill with simple weapons, the only way to efficiently kill one was to destroy its orb, which also happened to be the most resistant part of its body.
Guns needed to be fired at gunpoint to damage it, and Ufogs rarely left this opportunity to their opponents. And they were quick, and far more intelligent than any animal present on Earth.
But even if they lost a lot of ground, humans still fighted and the losses were numerous on both sides.
The humans had technological advantages, but Ufogs were immortal - unless until their ennemy figured that the orb was their weakness. But then, they adapted, using scrap metal pieces found on the battlefield to make armor protecting their orb.
The war left the Earth defigured, with lands ravaged by explosions and fire.
It took nearly 50 years before both camps found a sort of agreement, or because both were tired of fighting..
Well, this whole story was around one hundred years ago today. The aftermath of the war was not pretty to witness, and it took several years for nature to recover from it.
Humanity, still confined between fortified cities, learned to live with this new predator in their surroundings, but did not abandon hope of finding an efficient way to eradicate this alien threat in many ways possible, studying their opponents and developing more and more technological assets to take back what belongs to them, while Ufogs made themselves at home, finding their place on top of the food chain and adapting, evolving in this new planet.

Behaviour

Ufogs are predators that lives in big groups of several hundred individuals called "Colony".
They are smart, really smart compared to wildlife on earth. They have a defined hierarchy, know how to build basic structures and tools, and they have a culture and beliefs.
Ufogs are at birth assigned Ranks depending of the strength of their lifeforce (contained in their orb) and their bodytype.
Its rank is part of an Ufogs identity, as it will determine what they will do for the colony, their role, and even if it's possible to "rank up", most Ufogs will keep the same rank all their lives.
Seekers : Most common kind of Ufogs. They are the smallest, and represent what you would call "peasants and normal citizens" in a human society. They hunt for food, patrol territory, seek for Spacial shards, build and make the colony live. They all can have different tasks and specialities.
Berserkers : The soldiers. Big, bulky, and muscular, they are made to fight opponents of any species that threaten their colony and fight in conflicts both against other colonies or humans.
Guardians : They are the high-ranked Ufogs in charge of both Seekers and Berserkers. They lead them, give orders and react to crisis. They are also the ones in charge of baby Ufogs, to raise and train them. They also serve as mediator between the Ufogs of a colony, representing their queen outside the Core.
Royals : Only a few Ufogs fit this category - the Queens of each colony, and other unknown Ufogs who do not belong to colonies. It's quite a mysterious rank with little known about it… but those are definitely the most dangerous and powerful type of Ufogs.
On Earth, five major colonies rules the planet - the Blue, Red, Yellow, Green and finally Purple colonies, each ruled by a Queen. Queens are Royal Ufogs with an enormous amount of Lifeforce, and who use their lifeforce to mark and control Ufogs in their colony - and feeding from it slowly. In exchange, the control of a Queen stabilize the lifeforce of an Ufogs and can return a bit of her own lifeforce. It's a convenient relationship for both parties.
The more a Queen have Ufogs under her control, the more powerful she become, and in exchange, the more powerful the Ufogs of her colony become. That's why number is really important for Ufogs, and they consider one's life as something both precious and strategic.
If a Queen die or if an Ufogs is abducted by another colony (war prisonner for example) this Ufogs will get "Erased" by its new colony, a painful process consisting in removing the marks of the old Queen and adding the mark of the new Queen - Ufogs have to serve the Queens they bear the mark of, even without their agreement. Even if their own free will remains, a Queen influence is quite strong.
And she is usually well-surrounded by Guardians to make sure every Ufogs is well-behaved.

Colonies

Each colony have its own way of functioning, cultures, and beliefs. Colonies have huge territories expanding in thousands of kilometers, with a location known as "Core", which is the main nest of the colony, location where the Queen resides.
It's really just like a kingdom, with the main castle and its lands.
RED COLONY. The red colony's Core is located near volcanic formations of rocks. They are used to hot temperatures, their territory containing a big part of desertic lands and volcans.
BLUE COLONY.The blue colony take great pride in their Core, located on an Island. It's richly decorated with pearls, seashells and gold. They have the habit of hunting underwater and along the seashores as well. Even if they can't breathe underwater, they can hold their breath quite well.
YELLOW COLONY. Their Core is located on a mountain-top, covered in snow and freezing winds. The yellow colony have developed a strong resistance to cold temperature, and is used to chase their food both in mountains, in lands or snowy forests.
**GREEN COLONY. ** The Core is located in a swamp, surrounded by a huge forest.
__ PURPLE COLONY.__ Its Core is right in the middle of a huge abandoned human metropole. They found quite their ease in human infrastructures.

Orb & lifeforce

The orb of an Ufogs is essential for its survival, as it contains its Lifeforce. The Lifeforce is an energy, the very energy that is giving them life.
When they form their body, an Ufogs have a two-branches tail that will surrounds the orb without touching it. Each branch of the tail act like magnets, with the Lifeforce of the orb being both attracted and repulsed by it, allowing it to stay right between the two branches in a stable way.
The bigger an Ufogs orb is, or the most orb an Ufogs have, the more Lifeforce they have, which is directly linked to their power and ranks. Some Ufogs have smaller orbs but with a really strong lifeforce, really condensed. It really depends of each case, but an Ufogs is able to sense another Ufogs "lifeforce-levels" easily, which make them able to know who they are facing.
The Lifeforce, also called Essence, is a strong energy, without it, the Ufogs dies. It's the equivalent of its blood - and also what fills its veins. And a prized resource for both humans and other creatures (be it other Ufogs, or the creatures that roamed in their homeplanet before the asteroid crash)The only way to kill an Ufogs is to destroy its orb. Otherwise, you can kill its body but if the orbs is not damaged, they will be able to restore their body (see dormant state)
Depending on the injuries they had, which made them go into dormant state, the body they will reform will keep a few scars of their past death.
If the orb is slightly damaged but not entirely shattered, their essence will escape its container slowly, killing them a little more everyday. They can survive more than a year with a damaged orb, but it'll most likely kill them in less than that - they will start to loose their mind, become aggressive and can also turn Void in the process.

Dormant State

Dormant state is the state in which Ufogs, if their body took too much damage, or if the living conditions are not sufficient (lack of food, water, breathable air…), their body "die" but only their orb, full of their lifeforce, remains. The Orb will remain still and will wait until better conditions, or until they regain their strength, to be able to exit the Dormant-state and reform a body.
It's basically a way to, if their orb is not damaged, revive infinitely, but there's a downside : the process can be really long, and the Ufogs loose a bit of lifeforce each time they have to enter dormant state - which means, one time too many (the number of time depends of the Ufogs original quantity of lifeforce, it could be around 10 times like it could be 50) could cause their actual death, or at least lock them in dormant state because they can't reform their body. Plus, in dormant state, the orb is vulnerable, and if it gets attacked and damaged, they will die - really die.
It's why Ufogs will try everything to avoid entering in dormant state.

Alimentation

Ufogs are not picky eater. They can eat fish, meat, eggs, insects, birds… It all depends on one's personal taste what they will enjoy the most. They can even eat processed food that they steal from humans, or berries/mushrooms, but one thing in our ecosystem is highly toxic for them : Chlorophylle. If they eat a green leaf, or anything really, containing chlorophyll, their body will die after a few painful days, and they will have to enter dormant-state until they can restore their body.

Home Planet

Their Homeplanet had a vast ecosystem with several creatures with a similar orb/lifeforce system than Ufogs. That's why their while anatomy is made to hunt creatures with thick skin and orbs buried under it like an inner organ (which was the case for most prey-species in their homeplanet), their talons allowing them to pierce through even the hardest shells, to stabilize themselves on their prey, while their powerful bottom jaw full of teeth is used to dig through the skin, to access the orb of their prey and get it out of the body.
They then were eating the body and the orb, both full of Lifeforce, even if the Orb was considered to be reserved with high-ranked Ufogs as it contains a lot of Lifeforce.
Their homeplanet had two suns of a bright orange color, and a really short night cycle. But the planet also had a vast network of underground caves filled with glowing plants and creatures, where the darkness was constant.
It was quite a dry planet without oceans, only small bodies of water on the surface. The underwater caves were where to find water.

VOID Ufogs

During a brutal attack of the Purple colony, the Queen of the Yellow colony got severly hurt. Her orb got heavily damaged, leaving her weakened. But a Queen is a really strange and powerfull being - instead of dying, like a regular Ufogs would have, considering the gravity of her wounds, she started pumping higher quantity of Lifeforce from her Ufogs to stabilize herself. The weaker Ufogs of her colony suffered from it the most, and it appeared that some of them started to act strangely, their lifeforce becoming more and more unstable. And they started turning into what we call today "VOID". Ufogs who lose their mind, their ability to feel the link connecting them to their colony, but also the capacity to control themselves, becoming overly brutal and dangerous.
The first sign of an unstable Ufogs becoming Void is its lifeforce weakening, followed by an excessive irritability, but also a growing and unsatiable hunger. They slowly lose the capacity to feel pain and gain body mass and muscles, as well as a rougher skin.
When the Void case is in its terminal stage, the Ufogs is like a rabid animal, attacking everything that cross its path, friends and family alike. They tends to only keep strong memories and emotions, but are uncapable of controlling themselves, therefore could easily attack one of their loved ones without hesitation.
They are prone to cannibalism, trying to consumme the lifeforce of other Ufogs, causing their skin to crack (in what is called a "Fissure", full of unstable lifeforce)
Void Ufogs are STRONG oponents, the fact that they lose the ability to feel pain make them even more dangerous. Several Berserkers would be needed to take down one Void.
Luckily, the fact that they are uncontrollable have an advantage - they also attack other Void Ufogs to consume their lifeforce.
This illness seems to only affect Ufo Seekers. The case of healthy Ufogs from other colonies becoming Void after being in contact with the unstable lifeforce of a Void also made this situation more critical for all Colonies - which lead all the colonies to seek for a remedy.
